Selecting object in 2d mode versus 3d mode

Frequently I receive the message about selecting objects in 2d mode changing their Workplane. After some consternation I learned that (as I am only working in 2d) that I can ignore the message. However it is disrupting to keep coming across it at random.
Is there a way to highlight which objects are in 3d mode?
Another less important question is: What is the difference between drawing in 2d mode and 3d mode?
Cheers

Thanks, Marek. I did search the posts but may have missed that one as it was started under a different topic.
Brian's response is characteristically concise and correct, and it has helped me understand it a bit more than before. Cheers
